4.First-aid measures
4.1 Description of necessary first-aid measures
General advice
Consult a physician. Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.
If inhaled
Fresh air, rest. Seek medical attention if you feel unwell.
In case of skin contact
First rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again.
In case of eye contact
Rinse with plenty of water (remove contact lenses if easily possible).
If swallowed
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer immediately for medical attention.
4.2 Most important symptoms/effects, acute and delayed
Excerpt from ERG Guide 127 [Flammable Liquids (Water-Miscible)]: Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control may cause pollution. (ERG, 2016)
4.3 Indication of immediate medical attention and special treatment needed, if necessary
/SRP:/ Immediate first aid: Ensure that adequate decontamination has been carried out. If patient is not breathing, start artificial respiration, preferably with a demand-valve resuscitator, bag-valve-mask device, or pocket mask, as trained. Perform CPR as necessary. Immediately flush contaminated eyes with gently flowing water. Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position, if possible) to maintain an open airway and prevent aspiration. Keep patient quiet and maintain normal body temperature. Obtain medical attention. /Esters and related compounds/
5.Fire-fighting measures
5.1 Extinguishing media
Suitable extinguishing media
For small (incipient) fires, use media such as "alcohol" foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide. For large fires, apply water from as far as possible. Use very large quantities (flooding) of water applied as a mist or spray; solid streams of water may be ineffective. Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water. Use water spray to cool unopened containers. Wear self contained breathing apparatus for fire fighting if necessary.
5.2 Specific hazards arising from the chemical
This chemical is flammable.
5.3 Special protective actions for fire-fighters
Wear self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighting if necessary.
6.Accidental release measures
6.1 Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
Use personal protective equipment. Avoid dust formation. Avoid breathing vapours, mist or gas. Ensure adequate ventilation. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Avoid breathing dust. For personal protection see section 8.
6.2 Environmental precautions
Remove all ignition sources. Consult an expert! Personal protection: filter respirator for organic gases and vapours adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Ventilation. Collect leaking liquid in sealable containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations. Do NOT wash away into sewer.
6.3 Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up
Use personal protective equipment. Avoid breathing vapors, mist or gas. Ensure adequate ventilation. Remove all sources of ignition. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Beware of vapors accumulating to form explosive concentrations. Vapors can accumulate in low areas. Environmental precautions: Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Do not let product enter drains. Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up: Contain spillage, and then collect with non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g. sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite) and place in container for disposal according to local / national regulations.
7.Handling and storage
7.1 Precautions for safe handling
Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Avoid exposure - obtain special instructions before use.Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. For precautions see section 2.2.
7.2 Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
Fireproof. Separated from oxidants. Cool. Well closed. Keep in the dark. Store in an area without drain or sewer access.Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Store in cool place.

10.3 Possibility of hazardous reactions
Flammable liquidThe vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible. 12.2 Persistence and degradability
AEROBIC: No biodegradation of ethyl tert-butyl ether, present at 3,000 ug/L, was observed when incubated in soils with previous exposure to methyl tert-butyl ether(1). Ethyl tert-butyl ether, present at 89 mg/L, was 100% biodegraded in 90 hours using a methyl tert-butyl ether enrichment culture derived from a return activated sludge inoculum collected at a petroleum refinery wastewater treatment plant, incubated at 30°C. Loss in the abiotic control was approximately 20%; tert-Butanol was identified as a degradation product(2). A rate of -18 mg/L/day was reported using acclimated activated sludge; 69 mg/L per day (0.25 g/g dry weight/day) was removed using upflow anoxic fixed bed reactors, a removal efficiency of >99%(3).
12.3 Bioaccumulative potential
An estimated BCF of 9 was calculated in fish for ethyl tert-butyl ether(SRC), using an estimated log Kow of 1.92(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).
12.4 Mobility in soil
Koc values of ethyl tert-butyl have been reported to range from 9 to 160(1,2). According to a classification scheme(3), these Koc values suggest that ethyl tert-butyl ether is expected to have very high to moderate mobility in soil.
12.5 Other adverse effects
no data available
13.Disposal considerations
13.1 Disposal methods
Product
The material can be disposed of by removal to a licensed chemical destruction plant or by controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing. Do not contaminate water, foodstuffs, feed or seed by storage or disposal. Do not discharge to sewer systems.
Contaminated packaging
Containers can be triply rinsed (or equivalent) and offered for recycling or reconditioning. Alternatively, the packaging can be punctured to make it unusable for other purposes and then be disposed of in a sanitary landfill. Controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing is possible for combustible packaging materials.
