4.2 Most important symptoms/effects, acute and delayed

Extremely toxic; probable oral lethal dose in humans is 5-50 mg/kg, between 7 drops and 1 teaspoonful for a 150 lb. person. It is highly toxic when inhaled. Material is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It is similar in action to other organophosphorous pesticides in its toxicity. It is slightly less toxic than parathion. Gastrointestinal, neurologic and respiratory symptoms may accompany poisoning with this material. High doses may cause a toxic psychosis similar to acute alcoholism. Persons taking phenobarbital and phenaglycodol together, glutethimide, chlorpromazine hydrochloride, or meprobamate may be at greater risk. These drugs appear to enhance the toxicity of the material markedly. (EPA, 1998)
